Ukrainian Forces Could Acquire As Many As 150 Saab Gripen Combat Aircraft Paid For With Seized Moscow's Funds

As part of a recently announced agreement, the Ukrainian military may purchase a sizable fleet of Sweden's Gripen fighter jets, with funding potentially coming from frozen Russian state assets.

An Ideal Solution for Ukraine's Battlefield Requirements

This aircraft has long been regarded as particularly well-adapted to Ukraine's operational environment. One key feature to take off and land from highways as well as traditional runways enables it to be deployed from dispersed locations, enhancing its survivability against enemy strikes.

We fully realise this is a complex process ahead of us… But from today we are dedicated to exploring every option in supplying Ukrainian forces with a significant number of Gripen fighters in the coming years.

Enhanced Performance for Ukraine's Air Force

Ukrainian leader stated that his military plan to begin operating the new fighters by next year. For Ukrainian troops, these aircraft are a priority. It is about financing, about manoeuvres.

  • Advanced Sensors: The Gripen E features state-of-the-art radar technology.
  • EW Capabilities: It possesses internal EW systems for enhanced survivability.
  • Long-Range Armament: Its ability to deploy Meteor AAMs offers a significant combat edge.

As noted by air power analysts, the Gripen E would represent a significantly superior medium-weight aircraft compared to the country's current inventory.

Global Measures and Support Initiatives

Concurrently, new international sanctions designed to curtailing Russia's energy income have been announced. This involves restrictions on purchases of LNG and blacklisting additional tankers from Russia's so-called “ghost fleet”.

The European Union is also scheduled to approve its newest set of measures, that includes monetary support for Ukraine valued at billions of euros, partly funded by frozen Russian funds.

Ongoing Conflict and Diplomatic Developments

During these talks, the president expressed approval for a suggested freeze in hostilities along the current frontlines, even though acknowledging that the Russian side had made clear it would reject such an agreement.

At the same time, Moscow's aerial attacks persisted, with UAV strikes hitting the capital for the second night, causing civilian injuries and damage to structures, including a kindergarten.
